Santa Fe contemporary photographer, Jane Sobie, embraces a less is more minimalist aesthetic. She finds beauty in simplicity, and the extraordinary in the ordinary. Jane is an award-winning writer and photographer and views minimalist photography as poetry without words.

Less is more

The simplistic style of minimalist photography offers breathing space around the subject. A refreshing break from our culture’s visual noise.

I love the rustic beauty of New Mexico’s kiva ladders. For ancestral Puebleon people, the kiva ladder was a metaphor for the spiritual journey. They descended into the kiva, an underground ceremonial space, then ascended to the Earth world where their ancestors journeyed.

I wander because I wonder. What’s down that alley? Unless there’s a No Trespassing sign, my curiosity takes over and the pulse of my camera lens quickens.

I’m a shadow hunter. Or maybe they hunt me. The interplay between sunshine and shadow captivate me. During the ‘golden hours’, after sunrise and before sunset, the dance of light is magical.

Although I’m a colorist in most of my work, there are times when color distracts me from the story the image is trying to tell. Black and white photos have a timeless reflective quality.
